Thomas Reginald Tweed was born on 24th May 1914 in Elham, Kent (Elham Q2-1914 2A:2244), son of Thomas and Lilian Marion (née ARCHER), of Burwell. His father was a local coal merchant and they lived next to the Gardiner Memorial Hall. Thomas attended the County School in Cambridge

In Q2-1938 in Worksop, he married Nellie TURNER, they lived in Worksop.They have not been identified in the 1939 register, but his parents were at May Cottage, High Street, Burwell



56 Squadron RAF moved from RAF North Weald to RAF Boscombe Down on 1st September during the Battle of Britain. The 15th September is always considered the peak of the Battle of Britain, the day the battle swung in favour of the Allies, and is now commemorated yearly as Battle of Britain Day

That day Thomas Reginald TWEED was flying from RAF Boscombe Down and crashed his Hawker Hurricane P3660 c/s US-?, one mile north west of High Post airfield near base. He was practising dog fights and failed to recover from a spin.
The rose on the ribbon for his 1939-45 Star signifies a clasp for the Battle of Britain and the oak leaf on his War Medal denotes his Mention in Despatches.
